Use JPG as a photo source
JPG is usually efficient for camera photos, lifestyle scenes, portraits, food, travel, and images with many color transitions. It can keep a photographic file relatively small, but its compression is lossy. Repeatedly opening, exporting, messaging, downloading, and re-saving a JPG can build visible artifacts around hair, product edges, text, and high-contrast details.
Use PNG as a graphic source
PNG is often a better source for screenshots, diagrams, flat-color graphics, interface images, logos, and designs with hard text edges. It can also store transparency. The tradeoff is file size: a photographic PNG may be much larger than a visually similar JPG. A platform may still recompress the uploaded file, so PNG does not guarantee that every published copy remains lossless.

Example: transparent product cutout
Suppose the source is a transparent 1200 x 1600 PNG of a bottle. You choose the 2048 x 2048 Shopify preset and Fit with Background. The complete bottle is scaled to fit the square, and the unused side area receives the selected background color. The downloaded PNG is a square image with that color behind the product; it is not a transparent square. This is useful for a consistent catalog, but it matters if you expected to keep alpha transparency.
Example: text-heavy screenshot
A 1600 x 900 PNG screenshot placed into the 1280 x 720 YouTube preset already matches 16:9, so Crop at 100% does not need to remove content. The PNG output preserves the local Canvas result cleanly. A 640 x 360 version has the same ratio but only half the width and height; exporting it to 1280 x 720 cannot reconstruct the missing text detail. Format and resolution solve different problems.
Should you convert JPG to PNG before resizing?
Usually no. Converting a compressed JPG to PNG does not restore details that JPG compression already removed; it only stores the current pixels in a different container. Upload the best original directly. The tool's PNG download prevents an additional local JPG compression step, but the destination platform may still optimize the upload.
