The safe-area toggle places a dashed rectangle 9% inside every canvas edge. It is a general composition aid. It is not an official Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, or Xiaohongshu template, and app interfaces can change.
Protect content that cannot be inferred
A background can safely extend beyond a crop. The only product name, face, price, tutorial result, logo, or title cannot. Place irreplaceable information inside the central region. Decorative shapes, texture, and empty background can occupy the outer area and absorb preview differences.
What the 9% inset means in common presets
| Preset | Approximate inset on each side | Central guide area | Primary risk to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1080 x 1080 square | 97 px | About 886 x 886 | Profile-grid crops and cramped logos |
| 1080 x 1350 portrait | 97 px left/right, 122 px top/bottom | About 886 x 1107 | Headline and face near an edge |
| 1080 x 1920 vertical | 97 px left/right, 173 px top/bottom | About 886 x 1574 | App controls, captions, and cover previews |
| 1280 x 720 thumbnail | 115 px left/right, 65 px top/bottom | About 1050 x 590 | Small-screen readability and lower-corner badges |
The calculated values are based on this site's overlay, rounded to the nearest pixel. They are not official platform safe-zone dimensions.
Example: vertical tutorial cover
A 1080 x 1920 cover contains a three-word title at the top, a face in the center, and a result label at the bottom. Turn on the overlay. Move the title below the approximate 173 px top inset, keep the face away from the left and right 97 px edges, and move the result label above the lower inset. The outer space can still contain color, texture, or nonessential parts of the photo.
Safe area by content type
- Text: keep complete words inside the guide and test them at small size.
- Faces: protect eyes, forehead, chin, and the direction of gaze; do not merely center the bounding box.
- Products: keep the full silhouette and required labels visible; ecommerce presets disable the overlay because product completeness is better judged from all four edges.
- Logos: leave breathing room around the mark instead of touching the guide line.
- Screenshots: preserve controls or labels that the tutorial specifically references.
Why a safe overlay does not guarantee publication
Different surfaces can show the same asset differently. A full-screen Story, a profile grid, a search result, a recommendation card, and a shared preview may use different UI and crops. Platform apps also change. Use the overlay to reduce obvious edge risk, then preview an important image in the destination app before publishing.
Safe-area workflow
- Upload the image and choose the final destination preset in the resizer.
- Select Crop, Fit, or Blur based on what must remain visible.
- Turn on Show safe area for social and creator presets.
- Move irreplaceable text, faces, logos, and results into the dashed region.
- Turn the overlay off briefly to judge the final composition, then download.
- Check the exported image in the destination platform for high-value posts.
Pre-publish checklist
- No essential word crosses the dashed guide.
- Faces and products do not feel pressed against the edge.
- The design still works when the overlay is hidden.
- The message is readable at phone-card size.
- Important posts receive a destination-app preview.
